Door rekening te houden met alle stadia van de levenscyclus - van de winning van grondstoffen tot productie, transport, gebruik en verwijdering - biedt een levenscyclusbenadering een volledig beeld van de ecologische voetafdruk. <span>Het kan ook worden gebruikt voor een \"van wieg tot graf\"-benadering (lineaire economie) of worden aangepast voor \"van wieg tot poort\"-beoordelingen of andere variaties, afhankelijk van de reikwijdte van het onderzoek. Er is sprake van greenwashing als bedrijven de milieuvoordelen van hun producten of diensten overdrijven of verkeerd voorstellen, waardoor consumenten en belanghebbenden worden misleid. But unfortunately, this is still part of reality.\r\nFrom Linear to Circular Economy\r\nCurrently, most plastic products still follow our linear economy and are being wasted at the\r\nend of their lifetime. While this has negative consequences for ecosystems and contributes\r\nto global warming, it also creates an economic loss. According to The New Plastics\r\nEconomy Report by Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 95% of the value of plastic packaging, or\r\n$80-120 billion is lost annually. To tackle the problems that waste in general is creating, the\r\nEuropean Union introduced the European Green Deal together with a new circular economy\r\naction plan in March 2020. This included a sustainable products initiative supporting the\r\ncircular design of products focussing on resource-intensive sectors such as textiles,\r\nelectronics and plastics.\r\nThe Lifecycle of a Sustainable Product\r\nIn an ideal world with a circular economy, plastic waste would not exist anymore as we know\r\nit. Plastic would have been up-cycled into products that can be recycled over and over again.\r\nThis way, the plastic stays in the loop. To end plastic pollution and make the transition to a\r\ncircular economy, we need to start with the design of the product. In fact, there are three\r\nsteps that we need to take to reach a circular plastic economy.\r\nFollow the Path to a Sustainable Plastic Product\r\nIn recent years, there has been a growing movement to eliminate all problematic and\r\nsingle-use plastic items and packaging. This means finding sustainable alternatives for\r\nthings like straws, water bottles, and grocery bags. It also means reassessing how products\r\nare made, with a focus on using less or the right kind of plastic and making products\r\nrecyclable. Additionally, all products must be free of hazardous chemicals that could harm\r\nboth the environment and humans. The first step towards a world free of non-circular plastic\r\nwaste is therefore eliminating all problematic and single-use plastics.\r\nReinvent the Product\r\nNow, the base for a circular plastic product is created, let us continue to the second step.\r\nSustainable products are made from materials that can be safely and easily returned to\r\nnature or the economy, without jeopardising human health or harming ecosystems.\r\nTherefore, sustainable product innovation is key to assure that the plastic that we do need is\r\nreusable, recyclable, or compostable. Not all materials can be combined with plastic but\r\nsustainable materials such as bamboo, wool, and cotton can be safely blended with plastic\r\nto create strong, durable, and eco-friendly products. Combining plastic with materials that\r\ncombine naturals and synthetics, would make it impossible to recycle either of them.\r\nTurn Plastic Waste Into Value\r\nTo close the loop, all plastic items that we use need to stay in the circle \u2013 without ending up\r\nin landfills and incineration \u2013 and out of the environment. At this point, new ideas for the\r\nrecycling of plastic to create sustainable products are needed. As a brand, you can get\r\ncreative about what your plastic waste should be turned into. Is it going to be new product\r\npackaging, actual products, or even recycled furniture for your office?
