Eetmaatje 2.0

The Eetmaatje, developed by Voedingscentrum, is a clever tool designed to help consumers measure portions of rice, pasta, and couscous to reduce food waste. Our challenge was to improve the product’s readibility, sustainability, and user-friendliness. Using Better Future Factory’s unique strengths in innovation, sustainability, and plastics expertise, we turbocharged the project, delivering a truly circular solution.

Original Design

The first version of the Eetmaatje was a great success, with over 1.5 million units produced and widely adopted. However, as time went on, several issues became apparent:

  • The product had a tendency to tip over easily
  • The portion markings were difficult to read due to low contras
  • The cup itself would become too compressed when held, making it less comfortable to use.

New version,

better material

To align with Voedingscentrum’s goals, we introduced a 100% biobased polypropylene (PP) material for the new Eetmaatje. This monomaterial is not only fully recyclable within household waste streams (biobased drop-in material) but also ensures that the product remains durable and transparent. By making the Eetmaatje from a recyclable material, we turned it into a fully circular product, contributing to both the environment and Voedingscentrum’s mission of reducing food waste.

We enhanced the product’s design to make it more user-friendly. An essential part of this process was the extensive prototyping phase. We created many 1:1 prototypes to test the product’s stability, ergonomics, and readability in real-world conditions. Key improvements included better readability of portion lines through laser engraving, improved stability with added ribbing, and a wider opening for easier ingredient handling. All the enhancements did not result in a more expensive product, as the final cost remained within the customer’s target price. This demonstrates that sustainability doesn’t always need to come at a higher cost.

A better product, for a good price
